On the Trail of Caravaggio

The main protagonist of the tour “On the trail of Caravaggio” is the great 17th century artist, Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio.

He was proud, rebellious and extraordinarily talented so much that he entered the good graces of many illustrious men of the time, such as Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. Caravaggio become a world famous painter.

In our tour we will discover some of Caravaggio’s works in Rome.

We will enter the Basilica of San Luigi dei Francesi to arrive near the Contarelli Chapel, the last chapel of the left nave, which houses a series of three paintings by the famous artist, dedicated to the figure of San Matteo: “The Vocation of San Matteo”, the ” Martyrdom of St. Matthew “and” St. Matthew and the Angel “.

We will then go to the Basilica of Sant’Agostino in Campo Marzio, where the large canvas depicting the “Madonna of the Pilgrims” is located. It is housed in the Cavalletti Chapel. By analyzing the characters’ colors, faces, postures and clothes, we will no longer be mere spectators but we will enter into dialogue with the work itself.

Finally, we will reach Piazza di Santa Maria del Popolo, to access the church of the same name. here we will admire two other great masterpieces of the artist: the “Conversion of San Paolo” and the “Crucifixion of San Pietro“. Also in these works, as in all those of Caravaggio, the element of light once again plays the role of the main protagonist.
