Guided tour of Castel Sant'Angelo

Get lost in the alleys of Borgo district, and then find yourself in front of another symbol of the Eternal City: Castel Sant’Angelo also called Mausoleo di Adriano. The purpose of the tour will be to discover the fascinating story full of intrigues and events that comes to life step by step.

History tells us that Emperor Hadrian decided to build a monumental sepulcher for himself, his wife and his successors including Emperor Antoninus Pius, Emperor Marcus Aurelius and many others.

The mausoleum lost its name and function in 590 A.D.. In that year Rome was afflicted by a serious plague that was decimating the population. To avoid the plague, a solemn procession was organized near the mausoleum in which the Pope Gregory I also participated. These had the vision of the Archangel St. Michael sheathing his sword and the vision was interpreted as a celestial sign, shortly after the plague would have been eradicated.

In memory of the event, today stands the bronze statue of the Archangel on the Angel’s Terrace, the highest accessible point of the castle. This is the best moment of the tour because here you have a beautiful view of the city.
