Capitoline Museums tour

Il tour includes: Capitoline Hill, Capitoline Museums, Roman Forum (view).

We are on the top of one of the seven hills of Rome, the Capitol, which was the religious center of the city at the time of Ancient Rome. It was the seat of the temples dedicated to the gods Juno and Minerva. The square that we can admire today was rearranged during the sixteenth century, by a famous Renaissance artist, Michelangelo.

The square houses the complex of the Capitoline Museums, founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV, who donated some of the ancient bronze statues preserved in the Lateran to the Roman people.

Visiting the Capitoline Museums means admiring a huge collection of unique pieces that are a clear example of what Rome has been in the history of humanity.

Our tour will begin in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Conservatori: one of the two buildings that make up the exhibition site of the Capitoline Museums. Here you will admire the remains of the colossal statue of Emperor Constantine, previously placed in the basilica of Maxentius, inside the Roman Forum.

Go up the stairs, your attention will be captured by a bronze sculpture, the Spinario: a naked boy sitting on a rock with the intention of removing a thorn from his foot.

In the next room, your eyes will be on the symbol of Rome, the Capitoline Wolf. It’ll be a great opportunity to know the legend about the foundation of the Eternal City.

In addition, you will discover the history regarding the statue of Marcus Aurelius, the only equestrian statue which has survived intact to this day.

The tour will also take you inside the Tabularium, an archive of ancient Rome. From here you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the Roman Forum and its beautiful monuments.
